Kent Soil and Water Conservation District awards scholarships to Miller, Daniels

CHESTERTOWN — Kent County High School graduating seniors Paige Miller and David Daniels Jr. are this year’s recipients of scholarships presented by the Kent Soil and Water Conservation District board supervisors and associate supervisors.

The scholarships were presented earlier this month.

Miller, the KCHS Class of 2025 salutatorian, received the Andelot LLC Scholarship.

While in high school she has been enrolled in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum, completed the Agricultural Science pathway in the Career and Technical Education program and consistently qualified for the high honor roll — while also earning multiple varsity letters in soccer and softball and staying active in 4-H.

Miller will attend the University of Maryland, College Park on a Banneker/Key Scholarship, the University of Maryland’s most prestigious merit scholarship for newly admitted freshmen invited to the Honors College. She is looking to major in environmental science and policy or agronomy.

Daniels received the S. Wickes Westcott Memorial Scholarship.

He is headed to Washington College to study environmental science, bringing what he learns back to the family farm.

Daniels is the starting goalie on the Trojans’ lacrosse team and is a member of the high school’s FFA chapter. He also is active with the Triple Shots 4-H Club and the Maryland State 4-H Shooting Team.

Scholarships are funded in part by the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts, Andelot LLC, Kent Soil and Water Conservation District and funds generated by the annual Cooperator’s Dinner silent auction.

Recipients are college-bound students pursuing a degree in an agricultural- or natural resources-related field.

Founded in 1938, the Kent Soil and Water Conservation District partners with local, state and federal agencies to help protect the Chesapeake Bay. It works with landowners to install conservation practices to protect soil health, prevent erosion, and to reduce runoff of nutrients and chemicals into the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
