Making safe choices

WORTON — Ahead of Kent County High School’s prom this weekend, the school held a Prom Promise mock accident on Monday morning, May 4 for juniors and seniors.

The first mock accident at KCHS since 2018, the real-life simulation included a live crash demonstration; DUI arrest scenario; Emergency Medical Services rescue response; two fatalities; several student witnesses/bystanders; a distraught mother who showed up on the scene along with a later visit by the Kent County Sheriff’s Office to advise her of the passing of her child — providing students with a vivid look at the consequences of impaired and distracted driving.

The students were assembled in the auditorium as first responders set up outside to begin the scenario. Students were played a recorded 911 call. A hysterical witness ran to the front of the stage to begin the actual scenario and call the students to the outside of the school.

According to Principal Kris Hemstetter, the goal of the mock accident is to raise awareness and encourage students to make safe, responsible decisions — especially during prom season.

“We want every student to celebrate, make great memories and return home safely. We encourage students to think before they drink, drive or text, and to look out for one another,” Hemstetter said in an emailed message to families.

Trish McGee took these photographs as area volunteer firefighters, including KCHS student Caleb George, a cadet with the Betterton Volunteer Fire Company, prepare the crash scene in a parking lot at KCHS.
