Man charged with attempted murder held without bond

TOLCHESTER — A Kent County man is being treated for multiple stab wounds at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore while his alleged assailant is being held in the local jail without bond on charges that include attempted second-degree murder.

Damontrall Jerry Miles, 39, also is charged with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

According to charging documents, Miles does not have a fixed address but he had recently been staying at the victim’s residence on Tolchester Road.

The assault occurred on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 24 in a residence in the 8000-block of Tolchester Road.

According to charging documents, a witness told deputies with the Kent County Sheriff’s Office that she came out of her bedroom to find Miles on top of the victim in the living room; Miles allegedly had a knife and was stabbing the victim.

The witness told deputies that she took the knife away from Miles, and he then fled the residence on foot.

The witness came out of the residence and flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911.

According to charging documents, the witness returned to the residence to render aid to the victim until Emergency Medical Services personnel and law enforcement arrived.

Sgt. Nick Watson of the sheriff’s office arrived at about 7:15 p.m. and found the victim, a 45-year-old man, suffering from what were described as life-threatening injuries.

The paramedic who treated the victim reported stab wounds to the man’s lower abdomen, chest, thigh and left wrist — five wounds in all.

The victim was airlifted to Shock Trauma, where he underwent surgery.

His condition has been upgraded to stable, Sheriff Dennis Hickman told The Evening Enterprise in a text message on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

On Saturday night, deputies located Miles in a residence in the 20000-block of Persimmon Drive, which is about a half-mile from where the stabbing occurred.

According to charging documents, a resident there told deputies that Miles had arrived wearing one shoe and that he had changed his shirt when he got there. Miles’ shoe and shirt were located in the residence, and both had blood on them, according to charging documents.

Subsequently, deputies executed a court-ordered search and seizure warrant at the residence where the stabbing occurred. Items seized included a bloody kitchen knife that was located on the living room floor and a bloody shoe that was located on the kitchen floor. The shoe was a match to the one that Miles had worn when he arrived at the residence on Persimmon Drive, according to charging documents.

Also, according to charging documents, there was blood splatter and pooled blood through the kitchen and living room.

Lt. Sean Maloney, commander of the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigation Division, reported that he examined Miles for injuries and observed only a small abrasion “the size of a pencil eraser” on his left wrist.

Miles is being held in the Kent County Detention Center without bond pending the outcome of a preliminary hearing Sept. 23 in the District Court for Kent County. At that time a judge will determine if there is probable cause to believe that Miles committed the offenses.
