Police charge teen as an adult with assault after alleged gun incident

CHESTERTOWN — Police here have charged a 16-year-old Chestertown male as an adult with first- and second-degree assault after an alleged incident involving a firearm.

At this point, the Chestertown Police Department is withholding the teenager’s name, Chief Ronald Dixon told The Evening Enterprise.

The teen also has been charged with reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace-loud noice.

He has a preliminary hearing in the District Court for Kent County on Wednesday, June 4, at which time a judge will determine if there is probable cause to believe the teen committed the offenses.

He has been released on personal recognizance.

According to a CPD news release, PFC Travis Burke and PFC Eric Nunez responded to the 100-block of Philosophers Terrace at about 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 24 for a reported assault with a firearm.

Dixon said a “large group of juveniles,” estimated to be 25 to 30, had gathered at the location where an argument took place.

The crowd was dispersed.

“Shortly thereafter, a juvenile reported that he was threatened by another juvenile in the group with a handgun,” Dixon told The Evening Enterprise in a text message.

The complaining witness also is a 16-year-old male.

The alleged assailant “brandished” a gun, Dixon said in a telephone interview Monday, June 2. No shots were fired.

No gun was recovered and no injuries were reported, he said.
