WORTON — If you are a farmer or a gardener, rain over the last four days has been welcomed.
Not so if you are a high school athlete in Maryland.
The state tournaments in baseball, softball, tennis and track and field, which would have crowned champions on Saturday, have been pushed back to Monday, May 25 — Memorial Day.
For Kent County High School junior Sebastien Cousineau, the No. 1 seed in the Class 1A boys singles tennis tournament, that could mean as many as three matches crammed into one day at the Wilde Lake Tennis Club in Columbia.
In the state quarterfinals, Cousineau, the two-time East Region champ, will face No. 8 seed Vince Gigliotti of Patterson Mill.
Gigliotti was the runner-up in the North Region tournament, losing in straight sets to Harford Tech senior Keagan Luu.
Luu is the No. 2 seed in the eight-player draw, and if the seedings hold true would see Cousineau in the title match.
Cousineau is 16-0 headed into Monday’s play, and has surpassed his win total of a year ago when he placed second in the state.
He is KCHS’ only state qualifier in tennis this year.
Meantime, Monday is day two of the state track and field championships at Morgan State University in Baltimore where KCHS senior Ke’yare Hawkins will compete in the shot put and junior Janey Depp will compete in the 1600-meter open race.
Hawkins punched her ticket to states after winning gold in the Class 1A East Region meet, where she extended her own school record with a throw of 35 feet, 2 inches.
Depp was the region’s runner-up in the mile, stopping the timer in 5 minutes, 36.82 seconds — also a school record. She set the previous record of 5:40.89 at the North Bayside Conference championships on April 30.
Hawkins and Depp are returning to Morgan after competing on day one, a rainy Thursday, May 21.
Hawkins placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 104 feet, 3 inches. She holds the school record of 110-5, set at last month’s North Bayside Conference championship meet.
Boonsboro’s Sidney Turner [121-4] and Sarah Mohler [118-8] placed first and second, respectively.
Allegany sophomore Rylee Bauer [109-0] was third.
Also on day one, Depp placed seventh in the 3200 meters in a school record of 12:27.80.
Snow Hill senior Allie Suarezapecheche was the winner in 11:42.92, following up her Bayside Conference and East Region championships in consecutive weeks.
A week earlier at the region meet, when she placed fourth, Depp set the previous school record of 12:33.19.
The record of 12:42.8, held by Erin Hoopes, had stood since 1996.

Didn’t Ryan Santmyer and Joe Ciganek play in States in tennis years ago?
We’ve had many folks qualify for states in tennis over the years. Sebastien is the latest, and the only one this year.
