Shore cagers take aim at Centennial playoff berth

HAVERFORD, Pa. — Washington defeated host Haverford in women’s basketball Wednesday night, 58-41, completing a sweep of the home-and-away series and tightening its grip on a Centennial Conference tournament berth.

WC (8-6 CC) is fourth in the 11-school league with one game remaining. The top-six teams qualify for the tournament.

On Wednesday night, Kaitlyn Boggs, who led all players with 20 points, scored on the first shot of the game to give Washington a lead it never surrendered.

Washington opened the second-quarter scoring on a run of six unanswered points to stretch its lead to 19-8 on an Abby Meredith layup with 4 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the half.

A Karry Kelliher free throw at the 3:23 mark started a 5-0 run to close out the half as Washington stretched its advantage to 26-12.

By intermission, coach Alisha Mosley had cleared her bench.

Meredith scored six of her nine points in the second quarter, and Boggs totaled nine points in the first half.

Washington’s women led by at least 13 points throughout the second half.

They took their largest lead at 44-22 on a Boggs layup with 9:20 remaining.

Washington shot 38% from the field, and received scoring from eight players.

Freshman reserve Maggie Lawrence contributed nine points, all in the final frame.

Emma Robinson totaled seven points, followed by Kelliher with five and Kiersten Rose with four to round out the scoring from the starters.

Rose led all players with 11 rebounds.

Washington won the battle under the glass, 46-32, with Boggs and Robinson totaling nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

Grace Leverton (team-high 18 points) and Shae Mercer (nine points) played all 40 minutes for the Fords, who slipped to 4-10 in the conference and 10-14 overall.

NOTES: Washington is 15-9 on the season, the second-most wins in Mosley’s 12 seasons in Chestertown. Mosley is guaranteed a fourth winning season in a row.

The Shore ladies close out the regular season at home Saturday against their conference rivals from Ursinus (10-4 CC, 16-8). It’s Senior Day, with tip-off at 2 p.m.
