Washington women erupt for record 24 goals in season opener

CHESTERTOWN — Washington found the back of the net just 18 seconds in and never trailed in a 24-7 mismatch with Marywood here Saturday afternoon in the first women’s lacrosse game of the season for both schools.

Junior attacker Mia Salvatierra’s strike on the first shot of the game touched off a run of six unanswered goals, including three in the opening 43 seconds, that signaled a blowout was in the making.

The Shore ladies equaled their program record for goals scored in a single game.

They also established records for free-position goals (9), man-up goals (7) and man-down goals (4) in one game.

Senior attacker Tobin Chambers scored three goals in succession — including two on man-down situations — during the 6-0 start, and she had her hat trick with 4 minutes, 51 seconds still to be played in the opening frame.

Chambers efficiently finished with six goals on just eight shots, and was 3-for-3 on free-position opportunities.

Salvatierra led all players with eight points on six goals and two assists.

Elisabeth Braswell, Piper Evans and Anna Wilson (one assist) each contributed three goals, and Lexi Vannera was two and two.

Wilson and Braswell collectively won 11 draw controls, helping Washington to a 22-13 advantage.

Also telling: Washington led 40-16 in shots, 22-13 in draw controls and 22-10 in ground ball pickup; was 9-for-9 on free-position chances; and was 12-of-14 in clear attempts, compared to 6-of-15 for Marywood.

Washington and Marywood (Scranton, Pennsylvania) were meeting for the first time.

Conditions were less than ideal. The late afternoon game was played in a cold, driving rain, and inches of snow cleared from the turf from a mid-week storm had not yet melted.

The shutout ended with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter when junior midfielder Avery Meighan, man up, solved McKenna Seashole.

Marywood scored on its next possession, Alli Duncan from Kaitlyn Smith, to make it 6-2 before quarter’s end.

The Pacers would get no closer.

Washington closed out the half on a 10-2 run, including four unanswered goals over the final 7 minutes, 22 seconds to extend the spread to 16-4 at the midway point.

Vennera’s free-position goal at the 7:01 mark gave the locals their first double-digit lead at 14-4; the margin was 10 or more goals the rest of the way.

WC’s Seashole (five saves) allowed five goals through 45 minutes, before being spelled by fellow senior Emily Markley.

Marywood used three goalies, including freshman Haiden Hulliger, an Easton High School graduate who faced only three shots and made one save over the final 7:08.

Washington returns to the Kibler pitch here on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Stevenson. The opening draw is at noon.
