Sultana Education Foundation co-founder McMullen is newest Kent School trustee

CHESTERTOWN — Drew McMullen has been appointed to the Kent School Board of Trustees.

An educator, nonprofit leader and longtime advocate for environmental literacy, McMullen has more than 30 years of leadership experience and a deep commitment to the Chestertown community.

He is the co-founder and president of the Sultana Education Foundation, a Chestertown-based nonprofit that delivers Maryland State Department of Education-certified environmental literacy field programs to pre-K to grade 12 students across 15 Maryland counties.

Since founding the organization, McMullen has guided SEF from a small startup into a nationally recognized leader in environmental education.

Under McMullen’s leadership, SEF has developed a thriving Chestertown campus, expanded its professional staff to 25 employees, grown its annual operating budget to $2 million, created educational programs that have served more than 250,000 students and established a strong organizational endowment to support its long-term mission, according to a news release.

“We are delighted to welcome Drew to the Kent School Board of Trustees,” Head of School Nancy Mugele said in a statement. “His passion for education, strategic leadership and lifelong dedication to inspiring young people through experiential environmental learning make him an outstanding addition to our board. His perspective will be invaluable as we continue to advance Kent School’s mission and prepare students to become thoughtful, engaged citizens.”

“We are grateful for Drew’s willingness to serve and look forward to the insight, leadership and enthusiasm he will bring to our board of trustees,” Mugele added.

Before co-founding SEF, McMullen held positions with Deutsche Bank, H.G. Wellington Capital Management and Echo Hill Outdoor School.

His contributions to education and conservation have earned widespread recognition. He was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the National Park Service’s Chesapeake National Historic Trail Advisory Council and was named an “Ambassador of the Chesapeake” by Gov. Martin O’Malley.

McMullen also serves on the board of directors of Chesapeake Bank and Trust Company.

McMullen is a graduate of Amherst College and St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire.

He and his wife, Claire Gervais, live in Chestertown.

Their children Evan ‘18 and Savannah ‘11 are graduates of Kent School.

Kent School is an independent day school located on Wilkins Lane outside of Chestertown that serves girls and boys from preschool through grade 8. Established in 1967, the school serves students from Delaware and the Upper and Mid-Shore of Maryland.
