Trojans score 11 unanswered goals to win on the road

HURLOCK — Kent County High School’s well-rested lacrosse players returned to the win column Friday, April 10, and in a big way.

Freshman Keelyn Clayton scored four goals and three other KCHS girls found the back of the net at least twice in a 14-5 victory at North Dorchester.

This was the Trojans’ first game in nine days, since back-to-back losses in the span of three days, and it was during their spring break.

KCHS led by double digits at halftime, 11-1, after scoring the first 11 goals.

North Dorchester [0-4] ended the shutout with only 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

This is only the second year for girls lacrosse at North Dorchester.

Shorthanded Kent County made the trip minus three players, including two starters.

Given these circumstances, KCHS head coach Jim Egan was able to be creative with his lineup — maximizing playing time for lacrosse novices Josephine Barnes and Aiyanna Copper while also moving players around in an effort to make the game more competitive.

Kayla Aguilar started on low attack, and Barnes and Copper rotated in on attack.

Also, in the second half, attackers Clayton and Mali Wirth and defender Mackensie Egolf ran some midfield.

Wirth scored one goal and assisted on two others, recording her first high school points.

Sophomore Clare Gerstung, who was three-and-one, earned the game ball; she achieved career highs in goals and points.

Jane Cleary also netted a hat trick.

Abby Gallo scored two goals, while Mary Jane Joiner [one goal] assisted twice.

Sophomore Abi Strayer, the Trojans’ only keeper, totaled 17 saves while playing the full 48 minutes.

NEXT: KCHS will host Cambridge-South Dorchester [0-3] on Wednesday, April 15 at 4 p.m. The game will be played in Trojan Stadium.
