CENTREVILLE — Flat terrain and hills.
Kent County High School’s cross country runners seem well schooled for both as they head into the second half of the season today with the Bayside Conference championships.
They closed out the regular season Oct. 16 in a meet hosted by neighbor Queen Anne’s County High School.
Most of the Trojans — seven of the 10 who competed — posted their best 3-mile time of the season, led by veterans Andrew Buckel, Ashton Dean and McKenzie Smith.
The course on the high school and adjacent Centreville Middle School campuses was very challenging, according to KCHS coach Patrick McColigan.
“They ran over a giant mound and through a deep valley,” McColigan told The Evening Enterprise. “They were all prepared for the hills from the training we completed,” he added.
Dean, a sophomore, stopped the timer in a personal record of 20 minutes, 16 seconds to lead the Trojans. He was 17th overall in a field of 41 boys from three schools.
Janey Depp, a sophomore who played soccer last year, also ran a PR of 23:41 and was sixth among 33 girls.
Queen Anne’s senior Ben Marks (16:14) and junior Faith Gordon (21:03) won their respective races.
Following Marks into the chute were 10 Kent Island runners, which included their five scorers to easily win as a team with 20 points.
In the girls race, all five Queen Anne’s scorers finished in the top eight for the team victory with 21 points.
