ROCK HALL — While on the scene of a fire near here on Sunday, the Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company chief was charged with driving, attempting to drive while impaired by alcohol and driving, attempting to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
William Troy White, 60, was charged after he failed standardized field sobriety tests, Kent County Sheriff Dennis Hickman told The Evening Enterprise.
White was released on his own recognizance to a sober driver.
Hickman said White arrived at the fire scene — what was described on the RHVFC’s website as a small outside fire — on Tolchester Road at Hitchingham Lane in his personal vehicle, but “was there as the chief.”
According to the fire company’s website, the alarm was at 4:44 p.m.
Hickman said the Kent County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 5:35 p.m. “reporting the potential violation.”
Deputy Levi Manning and Sgt. Nick Watson, the shift supervisor, responded to the fire scene.
Manning administered the field sobriety tests.
The sheriff said White refused a breath alcohol test.
According to the online Maryland Judiciary Case Search, White has a trial set for Dec. 4 in the District Court for Kent County.
