CHESTERTOWN — Mindful of the extreme heat forecast for this holiday weekend, the Historical Society of Kent County has moved its July 4 bell-ringing celebration from Wilmer Park to the Bordley History Center and nearby Fountain Park in the 300-block of High Street in downtown Chestertown.
The change in venue was made to ensure the comfort and safety of participants and attendees in light of the anticipated high temperatures, according to historical society Executive Director Maria Wood.
The time and date are unchanged — 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.
As part of a nationwide commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, participants will ring bells, sound ship’s horns and celebrate America’s founding. The public is invited; handbells will be provided for those who don’t bring their own.
Main Street Rock Hall, in collaboration with the Historical Society of Kent County, also will host a bell-ringing celebration at 2 p.m. on the Fourth of July.
Bells are to be rung 13 times, symbolizing the 13 original colonies that declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776.
