Red, white and wet

ROCK HALL — Embracing their red, white and blue American superhero selves, 11-year-old Peyton Reiss at the controls of May Worm and her father Ronnie “Reissee Cup” Reiss as the rope man compete in the docking contest Sunday, July 6 at the Caroline Avenue bulkhead.

Team Reiss out of Tilghman placed third among boats 31 to 40 feet.

This year’s activities sponsored by the Kent County Waterman’s Association included a blessing of the fleet, anchor toss contests and tube races for youngsters — in addition to the docking competition for boats in four divisions and a grudge match that awarded more than $600 in cash in the winner-take-all finale.

All told, the 2025 celebration of the waterman’s way of life lasted nearly four hours.

Waterman’s Day is always held on a Sunday, a throwback to the time when men and women who make a living on the water were able to carve out a day of rest.

It’s long been a part of Rock Hall’s extended Independence Day festivities.
