AMERICAN CORNER — Kent County’s bid for a region title in high school volleyball begins today (Wednesday, Oct. 29) at Colonel Richardson.
The Colonels (5-10) swept the regular season’s home-and-away series by identical 3-1 scores.
If Kent County’s girls are to advance, they must minimize the number of unforced errors and do a better job of serving, according to coach Michelle Phillips.
KCHS (2-12) heads into tournament play bolstered by a 3-0 victory in the regular-season finale Oct. 21 against Pocomoke (5-9).
It would seem that the improving Trojans followed the script for success authored by their coach.
“Pocomoke was tough,” Phillips told The Evening Enterprise, “but we were able to serve well and played good defense.”
Also, the Trojans cut down on the number of unforced errors and “our transitions were good,” Phillips said.
Phillips handed out high marks to Marie Parrish, who was on point defensively; Hallie Beattie, who served exceptionally well; and Brooke Starke, “who played a great game all around, from serving to defending and hitting,” Phillips said.
Kent County is the No. 5 seed in the Class 1A East Region II, and Colonel Richardson is the No. 4 seed.
The other first-round pairing is No. 6 seed Snow Hill (2-13) at No. 3 seed Pocomoke.
No. 1 seed North Dorchester (7-7) and No. 2 seed Mardela (7-7) received byes and will host in the region semifinals Friday or Saturday, Oct. 31 or Nov. 1.
The winner of Kent-Colonel Richardson will travel to North Dorchester.
